Hôpital Albert Schweitzer

Larry Mellon founded a hospital in Schweitzer’s name in Haiti in 1956. The Dr. Schweitzer’s Hospital Fund, now incorporated with Reverence for Life UK, has supported this hospital with donations since 1995.

Larry Mellon read a LIFE magazine article about Albert Schweitzer when he was 37. He was so impressed that he immediately wrote to Schweitzer. Thus began a lifelong relationship and correspondence between the two, which led to both Larry and his wife Gwendolyn entering the medical profession. They both visited Schweitzer in Lambarene and he gave his permission for them to use his name for the hospital they wanted to establish in Haiti.

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) provides high-quality healthcare and the hospital bears the words Reverence for Life above the main entrance.
