VALITA
Reference for Life UK works in partnership with VALITA, a charity in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, that helps people who are affected by HIV/AIDS and other hardships.
We support their vision of creating a safe haven for those suffering because of this virus, particularly women and children who find themselves in extremely difficult situations after their husbands and fathers have died of AIDS.
We have helped VALITA to buy a plot of land in Dar es Salaam and construct a building to provide a communal home for those in need.
We have funded two members of VALITA to attend a permaculture course. Permaculture is an approach to land management that focusses on working with nature to create sustainable ecosystems. Using the ecological principles they learnt on this course, VALITA are transforming their land into an environmentally sustainable farm that produces food for the residents, the surrounding community, and the people in their outreach programme.
We have developed a relationship with the local school and funded a water pump so that the teachers and students have a supply of running water.
There is still much more to do to fully realise our shared vision.
