Anandwan is a community which has given hope not only to thousands of individuals suffering from leprosy but to all who have come to know it as we have, because of the quite exceptionally happy and caring atmosphere and the beauty which pervades the place.

RfL UK and Anandwan

In search for a project in an English-speaking developing country which our Fund could support , we found Anandwan in Central India.

Founded by Baba Amte, then a young lawyer with a wife and two small children, this leper community was built on the principle that "power lies in the wrist" and creative work is the foundation for self-esteem. This inspired the lepers in Baba's care to create a most productive and thriving community.

During two extended visits by trustees of RfLUK, a close relationship was forged with this quite unique and exemplary humanitarian establishment. It is a place where an attitude of reverence for all life infuses everyone's activities in a way that is as natural and all-pervading as the air they breath and the ground on which they walk.

Baba's two sons and their children are actively involved in the management of the many and variant communities into which the project has grown. The younger son, Prakash has a very special affinity with animals, especially large cats like tigers and leopards, and has long been called the Albert Schweitzer of India. The full story here
